Liverpool’s pursuit of a new midfielder this summer has received a potential boost, with Wolves’ Joao Gomes now reportedly available for a reduced fee. The 22-year-old Brazilian, previously valued at £40 million, is now said to be available for £30 million after a proposed move to Atletico Madrid collapsed, according to Football Insider.
Gomes has been identified as an ‘ideal’ target for the Reds due to his extensive Premier League experience, having made 116 appearances for Wolves. This familiarity with the league is seen as a significant advantage, making him a ‘viable’ candidate to strengthen Liverpool’s midfield options. The drop in price comes after an agreement with Atletico Madrid fell through, potentially opening the door for Liverpool to make a formal offer.
Liverpool are known to be actively seeking midfield reinforcements following a challenging season where the squad’s depth in that area was exposed. Gomes’s profile aligns with the club’s apparent desire for a player already accustomed to the demands of the Premier League. He has established himself as a key player for Wolves since joining the club, demonstrating his ability to contribute both defensively and offensively.
However, Liverpool are not alone in their interest. Manchester United are also monitoring Gomes’s situation, having identified him as a potential addition to their own midfield rebuild. United reportedly made contact with Wolves after their deal for Atalanta’s Ederson stalled, and are expected to sign three midfielders this summer, having already secured Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans. While Gomes is said to have no clear preference between the two clubs, his desire to remain in the Premier League could favour Liverpool.
The competition from Manchester United could complicate matters for Liverpool, but the reduced asking price and Gomes’s apparent willingness to stay in the Premier League could give the Merseyside club an edge in the transfer race. A successful move for Gomes would address a key area of need for Liverpool and provide manager Jurgen Klopp with a valuable asset in the centre of the pitch.
