Manchester United are reportedly progressing towards a double midfield reinforcement with deals for Atalanta’s Éderson and Newcastle United’s Sandro Tonali, according to reports from Gianluca Di Marzio and Fabrizio Romano. The club is said to be ‘confident’ of securing both players ahead of the summer transfer window.
Italian journalist Di Marzio claims United have moved ahead of Atletico Madrid in the race for Éderson, who will bid farewell to Atalanta following their final game of the season on Friday. Romano has confirmed that initial ‘contacts’ regarding a transfer for the Brazilian midfielder will take place in the coming days, with Atalanta valuing him at approximately €45 million. Éderson, 26, has been a key figure in Atalanta’s midfield, contributing both defensively and in attack.
Alongside Éderson, United are also targeting Tonali, though a deal for the Italian international is expected to be more complex. Di Marzio reports that Newcastle currently value Tonali at over €80 million, potentially creating a significant obstacle to any transfer. The 26-year-old has established himself as a prominent player in the Premier League since joining Newcastle, demonstrating versatility in defensive and central midfield roles.
In separate news, veteran midfielder Casemiro is nearing a move to Inter Miami, despite potential challenges related to Major League Soccer’s salary cap regulations. Fabrizio Romano, along with Ben Jacobs and Tom Bogert, report that Casemiro has informed other interested clubs of his decision to join the MLS side, fulfilling a desire expressed since March. Inter Miami are reportedly “optimistic” about fitting the 34-year-old’s wages within league rules.
Further bolstering their midfield options, United are also monitoring Southampton’s Shea Charles, with the ‘Spygate’ controversy impacting the Championship club’s situation. The Mirror reports that United could intensify their interest in the 22-year-old, who has impressed with six goals and two assists this season. Charles, valued at £20 million, previously came through the Manchester City academy before joining Southampton in 2023. Finally, TEAMtalk claims United have taken the lead in the pursuit of West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, though West Ham are holding firm on a €90 million valuation.
