Manchester United are reportedly growing increasingly confident of securing the signing of Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali as part of a double deal potentially worth over £139 million. According to trusted Italian reporter Gianluca Di Marzio, United believe they are close to agreeing terms with both Tonali and Atalanta’s Ederson Silva.
The pursuit of midfield reinforcements comes as Casemiro is expected to depart for Inter Miami at the end of the season, and with Manuel Ugarte potentially being sold. United’s return to the Champions League next season has prompted a desire to add ready-made quality to the squad.
While Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson remains a primary target, his club’s recent safety from relegation has led to a reported £125 million price tag, potentially making the deal prohibitive. This has prompted United to explore alternatives, leading to their interest in Tonali. Newcastle are understood to be willing to sell one or two key players to fund their own squad rebuild.
Newcastle currently value Tonali at £100 million, a sale which would alleviate some pressure to sell other valuable assets. The 24-year-old joined Newcastle from AC Milan last summer for £60 million and quickly established himself as a key component of Eddie Howe’s midfield. He made 39 appearances across all competitions for the Magpies last season, contributing with four goals and five assists.
Alongside Tonali, United are also progressing with a move for Ederson. Atalanta are reportedly seeking €45 million (£39 million) for the three-cap Brazil international, who has just one year remaining on his current contract. Ederson has reportedly already indicated his willingness to join United. Fabrizio Romano reported that new contacts are planned in the coming days to finalize the deal.
The potential arrival of Tonali and Ederson would significantly strengthen United’s midfield options, providing competition and depth ahead of a demanding season. The double signing would represent a significant investment by the club as they look to challenge for major honours.
