Monaco have confirmed that Wout Faes and Simon Adingra will return to their parent clubs, Leicester City and Sunderland respectively, following the conclusion of their loan spells. The announcements were made by the club on Monday, bringing an end to the temporary moves that saw both players feature regularly for the Ligue 1 side during the second half of the season.
Faes and Adingra both arrived at Monaco in January as reinforcements during a period impacted by injuries and inconsistent performances. The Belgian defender quickly established himself as a regular starter, making 15 appearances from 16 games, playing a key role in bolstering the team’s defence. Adingra also featured prominently, primarily as a left-sided wing-back, starting 11 of his 16 appearances for Monaco.
According to L’Équipe, Monaco’s management were impressed with the contributions of both players and considered options to retain their services beyond the initial loan agreements, which expired on June 30th. The club explored the possibility of triggering the purchase options included in the loan deals – reportedly €7.5 million for Faes and €17 million for Adingra – but ultimately deemed them unlikely to pursue those avenues.
Further discussions included the potential for negotiating new loan arrangements, particularly in the case of Faes, given Leicester’s recent relegation to League One. However, the €17 million price tag for Adingra, who is contracted to Sunderland until 2030, proved to be a significant obstacle, especially considering Monaco had already paid a €1 million loan fee. The club expressed its gratitude to both players via social media, signalling the end of their time in the Principality.
The departures leave Monaco seeking further defensive and wide options ahead of the new season, while Faes and Adingra will return to their respective clubs to assess their futures.
