Real Madrid have reignited their interest in Manchester City midfielder Rodri Hernandez following the announcement of Pep Guardiola’s departure from the Premier League club, according to Cadena SER. The Spanish giants had previously been linked with Rodri, though reports in recent months suggested their pursuit had cooled.
Guardiola’s impending exit after a decade at Manchester City has prompted Real Madrid to reassess potential targets, with the belief that players previously considered unattainable may now be more receptive to a move. Prior reports indicated that Erling Haaland could be easier to attract without Guardiola, and defender Josko Gvardiol has also reportedly offered his services to the Spanish club.
Rodri, 29, is understood to be at the top of Real Madrid’s shortlist to strengthen their midfield, and the club are awaiting approval from newly appointed manager Jose Mourinho to formally pursue the transfer. However, Cadena SER notes that securing Rodri will be a “financially difficult” undertaking for Los Blancos.
Manchester City are determined to retain Rodri, who is currently under contract until the end of next season. The club have offered him a contract extension in an attempt to ward off interest from Real Madrid and are keen for him to commit his future to the Etihad Stadium. It was reported last week that Rodri was nearing a decision on the renewal offer.
The delay in Rodri’s response to City’s contract offer is reportedly causing increasing concern within the club. The Spaniard has previously hinted at a desire to return to Spain, which could potentially favour Real Madrid’s pursuit. Rodri has been a key figure for Manchester City since joining from Atletico Madrid in 2019, establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s leading defensive midfielders.
Should Real Madrid successfully acquire Rodri, it would represent a significant coup for Mourinho as he looks to rebuild the midfield following a period of transition. The transfer could also signal a shift in strategy for Los Blancos, potentially prioritizing experienced players alongside emerging talents.
