Schalke 04 have secured the permanent transfer of defensive midfielder Satoshi Tanaka from Fortuna Düsseldorf, the Bundesliga club announced on Friday. The 23-year-old has signed a long-term contract with the Gelsenkirchen side, extending until 2030.
Tanaka arrived at Düsseldorf in January from Japanese J1 League outfit Sanfrecce Hiroshima, quickly establishing himself as a regular in their midfield. He made 16 appearances for Fortuna across all competitions, contributing to their mid-table finish in the 2. Bundesliga. His move to Schalke represents a swift promotion back to the top flight for the player.
Schalke 04 director of professional football Youri Mulder highlighted Tanaka’s attributes as key to the club’s recruitment strategy. “Satoshi brings the qualities we need for the defensive midfield position in our style of play: he is aggressive in his work without the ball, dynamic and agile,” Mulder stated. “With his stamina and intensity, he fits the profile we are looking for very well. We are convinced that he will help us in the Bundesliga.”
Tanaka himself expressed his enthusiasm for the move, noting the clarity of Schalke’s vision for his role. “The officials of FC Schalke 04 clearly showed me in the discussions how I fit into their style of football in the Bundesliga. That really impressed me,” he said. He added his anticipation for joining pre-season training in July and playing at the VELTINS-Arena.
Schalke, recently promoted back to the Bundesliga after a difficult period that saw them relegated in 2021, are undergoing a significant rebuild under their new management. Tanaka’s arrival bolsters their midfield options and provides competition for places ahead of the new season. The signing demonstrates Schalke’s intent to strengthen their squad with young, energetic players capable of adapting to the demands of top-flight football. Tanaka’s ability to disrupt opposition play and contribute to quick transitions could prove valuable as Schalke aim to consolidate their position in the Bundesliga.
