Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move for Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Jason Steele, according to a report by The Athletic. The potential transfer comes as manager Roberto De Zerbi continues to reshape the Spurs squad this summer, having already secured the signing of Jan Paul van Hecke from his former club.
Steele, 35, is being viewed as a potential backup option for Tottenham, with Guglielmo Vicario expected to depart for Serie A, with both Inter Milan and Juventus expressing interest. De Zerbi previously managed Steele at Brighton, where the goalkeeper made 43 appearances across two seasons – the most of any keeper under the Italian’s leadership, before the arrival of Bart Verbruggen.
The move for Steele aligns with De Zerbi’s apparent strategy of reinforcing his new team with players he knows well from his time on the south coast. Tottenham recently paid £52 million to acquire Van Hecke, and have also been linked with Brighton’s Verbruggen and Carlos Baleba. The club has been busy this window, adding free agents Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi as well.
Antonin Kinsky is currently favored to be De Zerbi’s first-choice goalkeeper, having impressed towards the end of last season, but the addition of an experienced backup like Steele would provide valuable competition and stability in the goalkeeping department. Other potential options being considered include PSG’s Lucas Chevalier and Leeds United’s Karl Darlow.
Tottenham’s spending is expected to continue as De Zerbi aims to build a squad capable of challenging for Champions League qualification next season. The club is also reportedly pursuing Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, with a five-year contract offer on the table.
