Tottenham Hotspur are poised to submit a second, increased offer for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali this week, according to reports from SportMediaSet journalist Orazio Accomando and Sky Sports. The initial bid of £80 million was rejected by Newcastle, but Spurs remain determined to secure the Italy international’s signature.
Tonali’s representatives have reportedly informed Newcastle of his desire to leave, with a return to Italy being his preferred destination. However, Newcastle are holding firm on a valuation of at least £100 million for the 24-year-old, whom CEO David Hopkinson recently described as a “superstar player” on talkSPORT.
Fabrizio Romano reported that Tonali is receptive to a move to Tottenham, even without European football, citing his desire to work under manager Roberto De Zerbi as a key factor. The project at Tottenham and the opportunity to play under De Zerbi are reportedly strong attractions for the midfielder.
Despite this, some former players have expressed skepticism about the move. Newcastle legend Alan Shearer questioned why Tonali would choose a club that recently avoided relegation, while Gabriel Agbonlahor suggested Tonali should aim for a club with Champions League ambitions.
Accomando reported on X that Tottenham are aiming to close the deal at around £90 million (approximately €105 million), and that Tonali has already indicated his willingness to join the north London club. Alfredo Pedulla also indicated on X that the next bid could exceed €100 million. The potential transfer represents a significant investment for Tottenham, and would likely make Tonali their record signing.
Tonali joined Newcastle from AC Milan last summer for a reported £60 million, and made 27 Premier League appearances for the Magpies last season. He is currently with the Italian national team preparing for Euro 2024. A successful transfer would significantly bolster De Zerbi’s midfield options as he looks to rebuild the Tottenham squad.
