FC Augsburg have confirmed that Yannik Keitel will continue his loan spell with the club from VfB Stuttgart for the 2026-27 season. The 26-year-old initially joined Augsburg in the winter transfer window, but his debut campaign was significantly impacted by injury. The agreement includes an option for Augsburg to make the transfer permanent at the end of the loan period.
Keitel is a versatile player capable of featuring in both defensive midfield and central defense, offering tactical flexibility to coach Jess Thorup. He made six Bundesliga appearances for Augsburg last season despite struggling with fitness issues. Stuttgart signed Keitel from SC Freiburg in the summer of 2024, but he has found consistent playing time limited, leading to the loan move to seek regular football.
Sporting director Benni Weber expressed the club’s continued faith in the player, stating that Keitel’s character makes him a valuable asset to the team. According to Weber, Augsburg believe a full pre-season with the squad will allow Keitel to fully demonstrate his qualities and contribute more consistently on the pitch. The club are clearly hoping for an injury-free campaign from the German.
Augsburg finished 14th in the Bundesliga last season, narrowly avoiding relegation, and are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of the new campaign. The extension of Keitel’s loan, with the added option to buy, suggests the club views him as a potential long-term addition. This move provides Keitel with the opportunity to establish himself as a regular starter in the Bundesliga and potentially earn a permanent deal with Augsburg.
