Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a verbal deal to sign Argentina international Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth, beating Liverpool to the defender’s signature, according to multiple reports. The agreement comes after Tottenham secured their Premier League status for another season with a narrow escape from relegation.
Senesi, 29, will join Tottenham on a free transfer, having already pre-agreed terms contingent on the club avoiding the drop. This follows the earlier confirmation of a deal to bring Andy Robertson to north London, also on a free transfer, bolstering Roberto De Zerbi’s defensive options. Both players’ moves were dependent on Tottenham remaining in the Premier League.
Liverpool had reportedly shown interest in Senesi in recent weeks, but Tottenham moved decisively to secure the centre-back. Matteo Moretto, who frequently reports transfer news in collaboration with Fabrizio Romano, revealed that a four-year contract is being prepared for the Argentine. Moretto stated that Tottenham are “getting ahead of several European giants” with the signing.
Senesi has been a consistent performer for Bournemouth since joining the club, establishing himself as a key figure in their defence. His arrival at Tottenham is seen as particularly significant given recent reports suggesting the club are now open to selling Cristian Romero, following a series of off-field incidents. The addition of an experienced defender like Senesi will provide stability and leadership to De Zerbi’s backline.
The double signing of Robertson and Senesi represents a significant step in reshaping the Tottenham squad, addressing a perceived lack of experience and mental fortitude. These additions will be crucial as De Zerbi aims to build a more resilient and competitive team capable of challenging higher up the Premier League table.
