Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign 17-year-old attacking midfielder Samuel Martínez from Atlético Nacional U-20, the club confirmed on Tuesday. Martínez has signed a five-year contract with the Merseyside club, with a transfer fee of approximately €860,000 set to be paid to the Colombian side. The deal is contingent upon Martínez successfully completing a medical and obtaining the necessary visa documentation.
Borussia Dortmund were also interested in securing the services of the young Colombian, with Sky Germany reporting that Martínez was a key target for the German club for next summer’s transfer window. However, negotiations with Atlético Nacional reportedly stalled due to disagreements over the transfer fee, ultimately allowing Liverpool to capitalize on the situation. Dortmund had reportedly reached an agreement in principle with the player, but were unable to meet the demands of the selling club.
Martínez has been a standout performer for Atlético Nacional’s U-20 team, recently contributing three assists to Colombia’s campaign at the U-17 Copa America. His performances have drawn attention from several European clubs, highlighting his potential as a rising star in South American football. The midfielder’s ability to create chances and contribute offensively from an advanced position is thought to be a key reason for Liverpool’s interest.
Liverpool’s acquisition of Martínez represents a strategic investment in youth, adding a promising talent to their squad with significant potential for future development. The move provides manager Jürgen Klopp with another attacking option and strengthens the club’s long-term prospects. Martínez will likely initially feature for Liverpool’s youth teams, with a gradual integration into the first team squad anticipated as he adapts to the demands of the Premier League.
