Tottenham Hotspur are poised to significantly bolster their midfield with the anticipated arrivals of Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United and Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United, according to David Ornstein of The Athletic. The combined cost of the two transfers is expected to exceed £210 million, signalling a period of substantial investment for the North London club.
Tottenham narrowly avoided relegation last season, finishing 17th in the Premier League with just two points separating them from the drop zone. Roberto De Zerbi, appointed mid-season, successfully guided the team to safety with three wins in his first seven matches and now appears to be shaping the squad for a more secure future. The club has already completed the signing of Jan Paul Van Hecke for a reported fee of around £60 million.
Tonali is set to join for a fee of £115 million, while Fernandes will cost approximately £98 million. Both players currently feature for Premier League clubs, with West Ham having been relegated at the end of the previous campaign. The substantial investment in midfield talent suggests De Zerbi is prioritising control and creativity in the centre of the pitch.
In addition to Tonali and Fernandes, Tottenham have also secured the services of Marco Senesi on a free transfer from Bournemouth and Andrew Robertson, who has left Liverpool. These additions further strengthen the squad depth ahead of the new season. Robertson’s arrival provides competition and experience at left-back, while Senesi adds another option in central defence.
The acquisitions of Tonali and Fernandes represent a clear statement of intent from Tottenham, demonstrating their ambition to move away from recent struggles and establish themselves as a competitive force in the Premier League. The significant financial outlay indicates the club’s backing of De Zerbi’s vision and a commitment to building a squad capable of challenging for higher positions.
