Liverpool have officially announced the signing of Jeremy Jacquet from Stade Rennais, with the 20-year-old defender penning a five-year contract with an option for a further season. The transfer, initially agreed to in January, saw Liverpool pay a reported €63.6 million for the highly-rated French centre-back, beating out interest from Chelsea who were seeking an immediate deal. Jacquet was unable to feature for Rennes following the agreement due to a shoulder injury, but is now fit and ready to begin pre-season training under new Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola.
Jacquet expressed his delight at joining the club, stating that Liverpool’s “legendary” status and footballing project were key factors in his decision. He described himself as an athletic and quick player, comfortable playing out from the back and composed under pressure. The young defender also highlighted his eagerness to learn from Virgil van Dijk, describing the Liverpool captain as one of the best centre-backs in the world and a player he looks up to.
The timing of Jacquet’s official unveiling comes amidst reports linking Van Dijk with a move to AC Milan. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan have identified the 34-year-old as a “dream target” following a disappointing end to the season that resulted in missing out on Champions League qualification and a complete overhaul of their sporting leadership. Milan have already made a significant statement of intent with the club-record signing of Goncalo Ramos from PSG for €74 million.
Senior Milan advisor Zlatan Ibrahimovic is reportedly a key advocate for signing Van Dijk, believing he would provide the “emotional leadership” the team currently lacks. While Milan anticipate agreeing a fee with Liverpool wouldn’t be a major obstacle, convincing Van Dijk to leave Anfield is seen as the primary challenge, given his commitment to the club – he signed a new contract until 2027 last year – and Milan’s inability to offer Champions League football. The Rossoneri are also considering alternative, younger options such as Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio. The acquisition of Jacquet is widely seen as Liverpool preparing for a potential future without their long-serving captain.
Liverpool confirmed the signing on their official social media channels, stating the deal is subject to international clearance. The club hopes Jacquet will provide long-term cover and competition in the centre-back position, potentially becoming Van Dijk’s successor.
