Tottenham Hotspur are anticipating the departure of defender Cristian Romero this summer and have set a likely asking price of around £50 million, according to TEAMtalk. The club is reportedly preparing for the new season without the Argentina international, with manager Roberto De Zerbi not entirely convinced by aspects of the player’s profile off the pitch.
Spurs have already begun strengthening their defensive options with the signings of Jan Paul van Hecke and Marcos Senesi, providing cover should Romero leave. The club is also in talks with Micky van de Ven regarding a new long-term contract, demonstrating their commitment to the Dutch defender.
While the initial asking price is £50 million, Tottenham are prepared to accept a fee closer to £40 million if the circumstances are right, acknowledging Romero’s injury record. Interest in the 26-year-old is mounting from several European clubs, including Serie A champions Inter Milan.
Inter Milan enquired about Romero during discussions regarding Djed Spence, potentially exploring a combined deal that could involve a loan with an obligation to buy. Alessandro Bastoni’s future at Inter is uncertain, and Cristian Chivu, the Inter head coach, reportedly views Romero as an ideal replacement.
Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona have also held preliminary conversations regarding a move for Romero. Barcelona’s interest hinges on creating financial and squad space through player sales, while Real Madrid are also considering other options, including Bastoni and Nico Schlotterbeck. Should Real Madrid’s pursuit of Bastoni fall through and Tottenham lower their asking price, they are expected to increase their interest in Romero.
Atletico Madrid, who have tracked Romero for several years, remain attentive to his situation, with manager Diego Simeone appreciating his aggressive style and leadership qualities. Tottenham are aiming to resolve Romero’s future before he returns from his extended break following Argentina’s involvement in the World Cup, hoping to avoid prolonged uncertainty during the transfer window.
