Mason Greenwood is nearing a transfer away from Olympique de Marseille, with Fenerbahçe emerging as the frontrunner to secure his signature. Negotiations between Marseille and interested clubs have taken longer than anticipated, but a resolution appears close after interest from several European sides.
This summer, Greenwood attracted attention from AS Roma, Fenerbahçe, and Atlético Madrid, with Al-Hilal also expressing some interest. Roma, where manager Gian Piero Gasperini envisioned Greenwood as a key attacking player, presented a sporting project that appealed to the player, but the club’s financial constraints due to UEFA sanctions have hampered their ability to make a formal offer.
Both Atlético Madrid and Fenerbahçe have made concrete proposals this week, differing in structure. Atlético Madrid have offered €45 million with a potential €5 million in bonuses, but this figure includes agent commissions and a percentage of the transfer fee paid directly to Greenwood, a condition Marseille implemented to avoid inflating his salary beyond 2024. Greenwood was initially reported to be leaning towards a move to Atlético.
Fenerbahçe’s offer is lower, at €40 million plus bonuses, but does not include agent commissions and allows Greenwood’s representatives to forgo their share of the transfer fee. The proposed four-year contract offered by the Turkish club is financially substantial. The new leadership at Fenerbahçe have prioritized Greenwood’s signing, and have successfully brought Martin Budworth, Greenwood’s lawyer and a supporter of the Turkish offer, on board. Sources indicate Greenwood expressed a preference for Atlético to teammates earlier this week.
Marseille are pushing Fenerbahçe to increase their offer to €50 million, hoping to complete their first sale of the summer and satisfy owner Frank McCourt. Any deal will also require negotiations with Manchester United, who retain a 40% stake in Greenwood’s rights and will need to compensate Getafe, the club that gave him a chance during the 2023-2024 season. Marseille have explored the possibility of restructuring payments with INEOS and potentially reducing Manchester United’s share of the transfer fee, but the success of these efforts remains uncertain.
A source close to the deal stated, “It’s leaning towards Fener…” A resolution is expected within 24 to 48 hours, with all parties hoping to finalize the transfer by Thursday. The Fenerbahçe basketball section’s recent signing announcement, accompanied by a tree emoji, has further fueled excitement in Istanbul, suggesting confidence within the club.
