Werder Bremen are set to complete the permanent signing of goalkeeper Karl Hein from Arsenal this summer, activating a release clause in the loan agreement, according to Sky Germany. The Bundesliga club will pay a fee of €3 million for the Estonian international, with Hein expected to sign a long-term contract extending until 2030.
The move brings an end to Hein’s loan spell with Bremen, where he made two Bundesliga appearances during the 2023-24 season. While he featured sparingly, the 24-year-old reportedly made a positive impression in those outings, including performances against Bayern Munich and St. Pauli. Hein joined Arsenal’s academy in 2018 and has served primarily as a backup goalkeeper, making a handful of appearances in cup competitions.
Bremen’s decision to pursue a permanent deal for Hein appears to be linked to the potential departure of current number one, Mio Backhaus. Sky Germany reports that Backhaus has agreed personal terms with SC Freiburg, although negotiations between the two clubs regarding a transfer fee are still ongoing. Should Backhaus leave, Hein is positioned to compete for the starting role at the Weserstadion.
Hein’s development at Bremen offers a clear pathway to consistent first-team football, something that has been limited at Arsenal due to the presence of established goalkeepers. The length of the proposed contract signals Bremen’s confidence in Hein’s potential and their intention to build around him for the foreseeable future. This transfer represents a significant opportunity for Hein to establish himself as a regular Bundesliga starter and further develop his career.
Arsenal will likely view the sale as a positive outcome, recouping a fee for a player who has not broken into the first team and allowing him to pursue regular playing time elsewhere. Bremen will hope Hein can provide stability and competition in the goalkeeping position as they look to build on their mid-table finish in the Bundesliga.
