SV Elversberg are in discussions with Borussia Dortmund regarding a potential transfer for defender Cole Campbell, according to Sky Germany. The newly-promoted Bundesliga side are exploring both a permanent deal and a loan arrangement for the 20-year-old, who also reportedly attracts interest from Celtic.
Campbell spent the latter half of the 2023-24 season on loan at fellow Bundesliga club TSG Hoffenheim, making six appearances across all competitions. While he didn’t establish himself as a regular starter, the experience provided valuable minutes in Germany’s top flight for the young American. He initially joined Dortmund from Los Angeles FC in January 2023, and has made a handful of appearances for the Black and Yellows’ senior team.
Ruhr Nachrichten report that Borussia Dortmund are keen to protect their interests in any deal for Campbell, pushing for either a buy-back clause or a sell-on percentage to be included in the terms. This suggests the club still see potential in the player, but are open to allowing him to continue his development elsewhere with a degree of future control.
Elversberg’s interest comes as they prepare for their first season in the Bundesliga following their promotion from 3. Liga. Strengthening their defensive options will be a priority for the club, and Campbell represents a promising, albeit relatively unproven, addition to their squad. Celtic’s reported interest indicates a wider European market for the player, but Elversberg’s proactive approach could give them an advantage.
The move would likely provide Campbell with a clearer pathway to regular first-team football, something that may not be guaranteed at Dortmund given the competition for places. A permanent transfer would allow him to fully establish himself in Germany, while a loan could offer a stepping stone to a longer-term deal.
