Elyaz Zidane, the youngest son of former France captain Zinédine Zidane, will play his football in France next season after signing for Red Star FC. The Ligue 2 club, who finished fourth in the league last season and lost in the play-off to Rodez, announced the arrival of the 20-year-old left-footed centre-back on Saturday.
Zidane joins from Betis Seville, where he was playing for the reserve team in the Spanish third tier. Born in Marseille in December 2005, shortly before his father’s playing career concluded, he has represented France at every youth level from under-17 to under-20, recently participating in the Under-20 World Cup where France finished third.
He becomes the second of Zinédine Zidane’s sons to play in Ligue 2, following his older brother Enzo, who had a brief spell with Rodez in the 2021-2022 season. Enzo’s time with Rodez was not particularly successful, making 16 appearances before retiring in 2024 at the age of 29.
News of Elyaz’s transfer comes as his brother Théo, 24, is currently seeking a new club after his contract with Cordoue in the Spanish second division expired on June 30th. Their other brother, Luca Zidane, 28, recently represented Algeria at the Coupe d'Afrique des Nations while under contract with Grenade. The move to Red Star represents a significant step for Elyaz, offering him the opportunity to establish himself in professional football within a competitive league. Red Star will hope Zidane can bolster their defensive options as they aim to secure promotion to Ligue 1 next season.
Red Star announced the signing on their official Instagram account, showcasing Zidane in club colours.
