Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has informed the club of his desire to transfer to Real Madrid, with his agent already initiating contact with the Spanish club, according to reports. The Argentina international’s decision stems from Chelsea’s failure to qualify for European competition, a situation that appears to have been the decisive factor in his desire to leave Stamford Bridge this summer.
Fernandez, 25, gestured what appeared to be a farewell to travelling supporters following Chelsea’s defeat at Sunderland, a result that confirmed a 10th-place finish in the Premier League. Concerns have been raised about the team’s performance in the final weeks of the season, with some observers suggesting a lack of motivation to secure a Conference League spot. However, the ultimate failure to qualify for any European competition has reportedly pushed Fernandez towards seeking a move.
Chelsea are reportedly willing to allow Fernandez to depart, having removed his ‘untouchable’ status after he publicly discussed a potential move to Real Madrid in March. However, the Blues are seeking a substantial fee for the player, aiming to make him their club-record departure with a demand of €138 million (£120m). Contract extension talks have stalled, with Fernandez no longer engaging in negotiations after finding the terms offered by Chelsea unsatisfactory.
His agent, Javier Pastore, previously expressed disappointment with the contract offers made by Chelsea. Pastore has already contacted Real Madrid to gauge their interest, and Fernandez is said to be receptive to a bid from the Spanish giants. While Real Madrid are currently evaluating their midfield options, they are reportedly prioritizing a more defensively-minded player, such as Manchester City’s Rodri. Fernandez is capable of playing in that role, but has primarily featured in a more advanced position for Chelsea.
Manchester City were also previously linked with a move for Fernandez, but are now focusing their attention on Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson. Chelsea are keen to resolve the situation quickly to avoid disruption ahead of Xabi Alonso’s arrival as manager, but their high asking price and limited number of potential suitors may prolong the saga. The situation presents a challenge for Chelsea as they attempt to rebuild under new management.
