Othmane Maamma, the 20-year-old attacking midfielder for Watford, is attracting interest from several clubs across Europe following a season in the Championship and a standout performance at the Under-20 World Cup with Morocco. Despite being cut from Morocco’s final squad for the recent World Cup, Maamma is expected to be the subject of transfer bids this summer, according to L’Équipe.
Everton and Benfica have both reportedly made detailed inquiries about the player, while Crystal Palace are also monitoring the situation, though their plans are currently contingent on appointing a new manager. A currently unnamed French club competing in European competitions is also said to be interested in securing Maamma’s signature. Lille, in particular, previously showed strong interest in the player during the January transfer window.
Lille’s interest stems from Maamma’s potential for resale value, with the club believing they could acquire him and later sell him for a significant profit. The club’s recruitment strategy often focuses on identifying and developing young talent with high market value. This approach has proven successful in the past, allowing Lille to generate substantial income through player sales.
Maamma joined Watford with a contract extending until June 2029, but his playing time has been limited, prompting the club to consider offers. He featured in 25 Championship matches last season, scoring four goals and providing one assist, despite a disrupted pre-season due to his involvement in the Under-20 World Cup. He was named the best player at the tournament after leading Morocco to the final.
Maamma’s technical ability and explosive style of play are considered highly attractive to potential suitors. A move to a club offering more consistent first-team football could accelerate his development and further increase his market value. The competition for his signature is expected to intensify as the transfer window progresses, potentially leading to a bidding war.
