Everton have registered their interest in signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles from Lyon, according to TEAMtalk. The Toffees are seeking defensive reinforcements this summer and view the versatile 28-year-old as a potential solution, alongside several other targets including Aaron Wan-Bissaka of West Ham and Ben White at Arsenal.
Everton’s pursuit of Maitland-Niles is driven by the need to replace Seamus Coleman, whose time at the club has concluded, and potentially allow Nathan Patterson to depart if suitable cover is secured. The club is prioritizing a new right-back, though Jake O’Brien is currently filling that role, with the intention of allowing O’Brien to return to his preferred centre-back position.
Maitland-Niles joined Lyon in 2023 after a lengthy spell with Arsenal, where his development was somewhat inconsistent. He has since rebuilt his reputation in Ligue 1, becoming a key player for the French club due to his ability to feature at full-back, wing-back, and in midfield. Lyon are currently happy with the player, but are aware his contract expires in twelve months, meaning this summer could be their last chance to secure a significant transfer fee.
Everton are not alone in their interest, with Newcastle United, Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, and Fulham also monitoring the situation. Newcastle, in particular, are assessing multiple positions following the departures of Kieran Trippier, Matt Targett and Emil Krafth. Maitland-Niles’ versatility is seen as a valuable asset by all interested parties, and his prior experience in the Premier League is a positive for Everton.
No formal bids have been submitted at this stage, but discussions are progressing as clubs evaluate their options. Maitland-Niles is reportedly open to a return to England, having established himself in France, but would require a compelling project to leave Lyon. Sources suggest Lyon would consider offers for the player should a suitable proposal arrive this summer.
