Everton have secured the signing of midfielder Hayden Hackney from Middlesbrough for a fee of at least £16.5 million, potentially rising to £24 million, the club confirmed. The 24-year-old has signed a five-year contract with the Toffees, arriving after one year remained on his deal with Middlesbrough following their play-off final defeat to Hull City.
Hackney, named the 2025-26 Championship Player of the Season, progressed through Middlesbrough’s academy, joining the club at Under-10 level and making 154 appearances for the first team, scoring 16 goals and providing 17 assists. He was also reportedly a target for Crystal Palace, Nottingham Forest, and Tottenham Hotspur, but ultimately chose to move to Goodison Park.
Speaking after completing his move, Hackney expressed his delight at joining Everton, stating that the opportunity to work with manager David Moyes was a key factor in his decision. He highlighted the club’s ambition and the new stadium as attractions, adding he wanted to be a part of the club’s future. Moyes also commented on the signing, noting Hackney’s potential and his track record of identifying Championship talent who have thrived in the Premier League.
Moyes believes Hackney will add competition in midfield, a position he was keen to strengthen ahead of the new season. The Everton manager pointed to the club’s history of successful recruitment from the Championship, expressing hope that Hackney will follow in the footsteps of previous signings. Hackney himself stated he intends to contribute both defensively and offensively, offering a complete midfield presence.
Separately, according to TEAMtalk sources, Everton are also showing interest in Manchester City defender Rico Lewis, with City potentially open to a sale for around £35 million. Lewis struggled for consistent playing time under Pep Guardiola last season, and the departure of club legend Seamus Coleman has created a vacancy at right-back, a position Lewis can fill. Several other Premier League clubs, including Newcastle, Nottingham Forest, and Brighton, are also reportedly interested in the 21-year-old.
