Como manager Cesc Fàbregas has emphasized the importance of his team’s upcoming match against Cremonese, framing it as a pivotal moment in their pursuit of Champions League qualification. Currently fifth in Serie A, Como trail Milan and Roma by just two points with only a few matches remaining.
Fàbregas spoke to the press ahead of the fixture, stating, “We must play an important match, the match of the season.” He acknowledged the pressure but stressed the team’s belief, adding, “If we don’t believe, we go on vacation and play friendlies, leaving Cremonese the chance to stay in Serie A.” The former Arsenal and Barcelona midfielder reiterated his ambition to reach the Champions League, stating that statistics suggest Como are currently among the top four teams in the league.
Concerns surround the fitness of Nico Paz, a player co-owned by Como and Real Madrid, ahead of the Cremonese clash. Fàbregas playfully suggested Paz could play even at 5% fitness, but clarified that the team wants all players at full strength. He confirmed Paz is feeling slightly better but remained uncertain about his availability for Sunday’s match.
The Como manager also responded strongly to comments made by Inter sporting director Javier Zanetti regarding Paz’s potential move to the Nerazzurri. Fàbregas asserted that Inter’s interest was inappropriate, stating, “Zanetti has had an incredible career, knows the dynamics, I know Ausilio and Baccin, I know how Inter works. Nico is a player of Como at 50%, but he is ours. The only club that can say something is Real Madrid.” He firmly stated that Paz will either remain at Como or return to Real Madrid, dismissing any possibility of a transfer to Inter. Fàbregas believes Paz deserves to play in the upcoming match, recognizing his contribution to the team’s current position.
Como’s strong finish to the season has surprised many, and a Champions League berth would represent a remarkable achievement for the club. Their match against relegation-threatened Cremonese is therefore crucial, not only for Como’s European ambitions but also for Cremonese’s fight for survival.
