Borussia Mönchengladbach are set to sign Yukhym Konoplya on a free transfer after the player’s contract with Shakhtar Donetsk expired, according to Sky Germany. A full agreement between both parties has been reached, with transfer journalist Florian Plettenberg confirming the news on Friday afternoon.
The 26-year-old Ukrainian international is expected to undergo a medical examination today, with the transfer anticipated to be finalized swiftly. Konoplya will sign a contract with the Foals that extends until June 2029, representing a significant long-term commitment from the Bundesliga club.
Konoplya primarily plays as a right-back and featured in 27 matches across all competitions for Shakhtar Donetsk this past season, contributing with two goals and four assists. The Donetsk native has been a consistent performer for the Ukrainian side, demonstrating both defensive solidity and attacking impetus. He was a regular fixture in Shakhtar’s lineup despite the ongoing challenges presented by the war in Ukraine, which has impacted the club’s ability to play home matches.
Prior to this agreement with Mönchengladbach, Konoplya had been linked with a move to fellow Bundesliga side Werder Bremen as recently as January, but a transfer failed to materialize. Mönchengladbach’s successful pursuit of the player addresses a need for reinforcement at right-back, and provides competition for existing options in that position. The arrival of Konoplya will likely bolster their defensive options ahead of the upcoming season, as they look to improve upon their Bundesliga performance.
This move represents a shrewd piece of business for Borussia Mönchengladbach, securing a promising player without a transfer fee. Konoplya’s age and contract length suggest he could become a key asset for the club in the years to come, contributing to both defensive stability and attacking threat down the right flank.
