Fermin Lopez reaffirms Barcelona commitment amid Chelsea links
Fermin Lopez has ended any lingering speculation over his future by publicly committing his long-term future to Barcelona, despite significant past interest from Premier League side Chelsea. The 22-year-old, who signed a new contract with the Catalan club last summer, has been a revelation this season under Hansi Flick.
In an interview with Catalunya Radio, the Spanish international directly addressed the intense transfer speculation that surrounded him last summer. He acknowledged the late-window pressure from Chelsea but was adamant about his desire to stay. "It was a bit complicated; I felt a lot of pressure, but I never wavered. I couldn't say anything. Barca renewed my contract, and I'm very grateful. As far as I'm concerned, I'd stay here forever," Lopez stated.
The 22-year-old's commitment follows a period of intense speculation last summer, when Chelsea made a significant push to sign him. Sources indicated that Barcelona were reluctant to sell, a stance supported by the player's own desire to remain at the Camp Nou. His decision has since been vindicated by his form, having established himself as a key starter for Flick, contributing 12 goals and 16 assists in 39 appearances so far this season.
Chelsea's interest in Lopez was part of a broader search for a creative attacking midfielder, a position they are expected to revisit in the upcoming transfer window. With this avenue now effectively closed, the Premier League club will be forced to look elsewhere. Aston Villa's Morgan Rogers and Newcastle's Nick Woltemade have been identified as potential alternative targets, according to reports.
Lopez's declaration and current form mean Barcelona have successfully secured a key component of their present and future, while Chelsea must now pursue other options to bolster their creative ranks ahead of the new season.
