Liverpool lead Arsenal in pursuit of Newcastle's Anthony Gordon
Liverpool are reportedly ahead of Arsenal in the race to sign Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon this summer. According to a report from Football Insider, cited by former Everton chief executive Keith Wyness, the Reds are viewed as the more likely destination for the England international should he leave St James' Park.
Wyness suggested that Newcastle may be open to selling Gordon to help fund a squad rebuild, particularly if the club fails to qualify for the Champions League. He claimed the Magpies "will be better off for a change this summer" and stated, "I don’t think they want to keep him to be honest." Gordon, 23, has been a long-term target for Liverpool, who came close to signing him during the 2024 summer transfer window.
The potential move is framed as part of a wider attacking revamp at Anfield, with Gordon occasionally mooted as a future replacement for Mohamed Salah. Newcastle, facing financial pressures, could sanction several high-profile exits, with Bruno Guimaraes and Sandro Tonali also mentioned as potential departures alongside Gordon.
However, not all observers believe a move is in the player's best interests. Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton has advised Gordon to stay at Newcastle, citing his excellent form under manager Eddie Howe and the strong connection he has built with the club's supporters. Gordon enjoyed a standout 2024/25 season, establishing himself as a key figure for both club and country.
The situation remains speculative, with no formal bids reported. The coming months will determine if Liverpool formalise their interest in a player they have tracked for several years, or if Gordon remains a central part of Eddie Howe's project on Tyneside.
