Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez has stated his desire to remain with the club, dismissing speculation linking him with a potential transfer away from the Camp Nou. The 24-year-old addressed reports suggesting interest from clubs like Manchester United, following previous links to Chelsea last summer, in an interview with MD.
Lopez signed a new five-year contract with Barcelona in February, a deal which appeared to quell immediate transfer talk, but recent reports continued to suggest he could be a target for Premier League sides. However, the player was emphatic in his commitment to the Catalan giants. “I think you can rest assured,” he said. “Last year these things happened, there are always rumours…but I was very calm because I wanted to be at Barça. I have always shown this.”
Lopez is a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, having progressed through the youth ranks to become a regular member of the first team. He has established himself as a key component in midfield, contributing with both goals and assists. His current form has also led to increased recognition on the international stage with Spain.
The midfielder is anticipating a significant role with the Spanish national team at the 2026 World Cup, following a peripheral involvement in Euro 2024. Lopez expressed confidence in his growing importance to the national setup, stating, “I see myself with an important role. Luis (de la Fuente) gives me a lot of confidence.” He believes the team has the potential to replicate their success from the recent European Championship.
Barcelona are currently assessing their squad ahead of the upcoming transfer window, with several players potentially available for sale. However, Lopez’s clear statement of intent suggests he will remain a fixture in Hansi Flick’s plans, solidifying the midfield for the foreseeable future.
