Contract negotiations between FC Bayern Munich and midfielder Konrad Laimer have reached an impasse, according to sporting managing director Max Eberl. Speaking after Bayern’s match against VfL Wolfsburg, Eberl confirmed the club’s desire to extend Laimer’s deal but acknowledged a significant gap in expectations regarding financial terms.
Laimer arrived at Bayern in the summer of 2023 and currently has a contract that runs until June 30, 2027. He has established himself as a valuable member of the squad due to his tactical flexibility and consistent work rate, making him a regular contributor under Thomas Tuchel. The Austrian international’s current earnings are reported to be in the region of €8-9 million per year.
According to sources at Sky Sports, Laimer is seeking a substantial increase to approximately €15 million annually. Bayern, however, are reportedly unwilling to meet this demand, signalling a shift towards more stringent financial controls in contract negotiations. This stance was reinforced by honorary president Uli Hoeneß, who praised Laimer’s contributions but emphasized the need for players to understand the club’s financial limitations.
“Konny is a player I greatly value,” Hoeneß told DAZN. “He’s extremely important for the team, as well as for the club’s public image. He works incredibly hard for the team, but he’s simply not Maradona. And players like that have to accept that there are limits.” Hoeneß’s comments underscore the club’s firm position on wage structure, even for players considered integral to the team.
Despite the contrasting positions, Eberl was keen to stress that the discussions are being conducted professionally. “There’s absolutely no bad blood,” he stated, indicating a continued willingness to find a resolution. The outcome of these negotiations could influence Bayern’s midfield plans in the coming transfer windows, particularly if an agreement cannot be reached and Laimer becomes available for transfer. The situation highlights Bayern’s evolving approach to player contracts, prioritizing financial sustainability alongside squad quality.
