Midfielder Mateus Fernandes has informed Manchester United of his decision to join Tottenham Hotspur, according to TEAMtalk. The Portugal international reportedly chose Tottenham due to his belief in manager Roberto De Zerbi’s vision for the club, despite a potentially superior financial package from Manchester United.
Extensive discussions were held between Fernandes and both clubs in recent weeks, with United’s sporting director Jason Wilcox, who previously worked with the player at Southampton, attempting to sway his decision. However, sources close to the negotiations have confirmed that Fernandes was ultimately convinced by De Zerbi’s plans for the future of Tottenham and the opportunity to remain in London.
Tottenham are set to pay approximately £85 million for the 22-year-old, with an agreement between the clubs nearing completion after Spurs increased their offer. West Ham United were also prepared to accept a similar valuation, but the player’s preference was decisive.
The move represents a significant setback for Wilcox, who had maintained a strong relationship with Fernandes and his representatives. Wilcox was instrumental in bringing Fernandes to English football initially, but his connection proved insufficient to secure the player’s signature for United.
De Zerbi has made a notable impact since arriving at Tottenham, guiding the club away from relegation trouble and beginning a squad overhaul. His influence has already contributed to the signings of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke. Fernandes is now considered the marquee addition to De Zerbi’s rebuild.
Tottenham are also continuing discussions regarding a potential deal for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, with reports suggesting they have offered the Italy international a contract that would make him the club’s highest-paid player. An offer of around £100 million is reportedly on the table. The capture of Fernandes signals a clear statement of intent from Tottenham under De Zerbi’s leadership.
