West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes has indicated a potential move to Manchester United by naming Cristiano Ronaldo as the player he most wishes he could team up with. The comments, made to the Premier League’s YouTube channel, fuel speculation linking the Portugal international with a summer transfer to Old Trafford.
Fernandes has been increasingly mentioned as a possible replacement for Casemiro in Manchester United’s midfield. The 25-year-old has impressed this season, most recently delivering a strong performance in West Ham’s 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. His form has drawn attention from several top clubs, but Fernandes’ latest comments suggest a preference for a move to United.
When asked which football era he would travel back to and play in, Fernandes responded, “Cristiano in Manchester,” adding, “United were unbelievable at that time and Cristiano was amazing.” This statement is being interpreted as a clear signal of his interest in joining the club where Ronaldo first became a global superstar.
Ronaldo enjoyed a highly successful first spell at Manchester United from 2003 to 2009. Signed by Sir Alex Ferguson, he won three Premier League titles, the Champions League in 2008, and the FIFA Club World Cup that same year. Individually, he claimed his first Ballon d’Or in 2008 and was named FIFA World Player of the Year. He later returned to the club for a second stint between 2021 and 2022.
While a transfer fee has not yet been reported, West Ham may be open to selling Fernandes this summer. The club is currently battling relegation, and player sales could be necessary to reshape the squad. Manchester United, under their new manager, are reportedly seeking to bolster their midfield options, and Fernandes’ profile appears to fit their requirements. The potential arrival of Fernandes could provide competition and depth in a crucial area of the pitch, potentially setting the stage for a more competitive season for the Red Devils.
