Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has publicly expressed his admiration for Arsenal midfielder Declan Rice, stating he believes Rice would have been a “perfect fit” for the club. Fernandes revealed his feelings while speaking about winning the Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award, acknowledging Rice as a worthy contender for the prize.
Fernandes explained that he has known Rice personally since their time training together in the Algarve, and has long been impressed by his qualities both on and off the pitch. He admitted to being “sad” when Rice ultimately chose to join Arsenal from West Ham last summer, believing his skillset and personality would have significantly benefitted Manchester United. He highlighted Rice’s professionalism and the impact he has had for Arsenal this season, despite playing a different role than Fernandes himself.
The Portuguese midfielder acknowledged the differing tactical demands placed upon them by their respective managers, Mikel Arteta and Erik ten Hag, noting that direct comparisons are difficult. However, he maintained that Rice has been one of the standout players in the Premier League this season. Fernandes also stated he would have congratulated Rice had he won the FWA award, just as he did when Rice reached the Champions League final.
Rice’s move to Arsenal last year for a fee in excess of £100 million signaled a major statement of intent from the Gunners, solidifying their ambition to challenge for the Premier League title. He has since become a key component of Arteta’s midfield, providing defensive stability and driving forward with the ball. Fernandes’ comments are unlikely to spark any immediate transfer activity, but they underscore Rice’s reputation as one of the league’s premier midfielders and a player many top clubs would covet.
