Bayern Munich midfielder Javier Fernández will continue his development with 1.FC Nürnberg in the 2.Bundesliga next season, the clubs confirmed on Thursday. The loan extension, announced by Nürnberg, will see the Spanish youth international remain with Miroslav Klose’s side for the entirety of the 2024-25 campaign.
Fernández initially joined Nürnberg on loan during the second half of the 2023-24 season, making eight appearances and providing one assist. Sporting director Joti Chatzialexiou expressed the club’s satisfaction with the player’s progress, stating that Fernández has demonstrated “great potential” since arriving at the Max-Morlock-Stadion. Chatzialexiou also revealed that extending the loan beyond the initial period was a pre-existing plan.
The 18-year-old Fernández is a product of Bayern Munich’s youth academy and signed a contract with the Bavarian giants that runs until 2028. He has represented Spain at the Under-18 level, indicating his standing as a promising talent within European football. The move to Nürnberg provides him with consistent playing time, something that would be difficult to guarantee at Bayern given their established midfield options.
Fernández himself voiced his contentment with the arrangement, highlighting his comfort within the club and the city of Nürnberg. He emphasized the importance of playing time for his development, noting that he feels he is improving in multiple areas of his game. His stated goal for the upcoming season is to continue this upward trajectory and further refine his skills. This continued loan spell will be crucial for his progression as he looks to eventually break into the first-team picture at Bayern.
This loan extension benefits both clubs, providing Fernández with a platform for growth while bolstering Nürnberg’s midfield options in their pursuit of promotion to the Bundesliga.
