Enzo Fernandez is likely to leave Chelsea this summer, with his final appearance for the club potentially coming against Sunderland on Sunday, according to reports. The Argentina midfielder has been a key player since joining from Benfica for €121 million in January 2023, but hinted at a possible departure in March.
Despite having six years remaining on his contract at Stamford Bridge, rumours surrounding a summer exit have grown in recent months, and Fernandez is expected to attract significant interest when the transfer window opens. The appointment of Xabi Alonso as Chelsea’s new manager initially raised hopes that the 25-year-old would remain, drawn by the opportunity to play under a highly-regarded coach.
However, The Independent reports that Real Madrid are preparing a move for Fernandez. This pursuit is contingent on their ability to secure Manchester City’s Rodri, who remains their primary midfield target. There is a “strong chance” that Sunday’s match against Sunderland will be Fernandez’s last for the Blues, reflecting the increasing belief that he will depart Stamford Bridge this summer.
Fernandez has been a standout performer for Chelsea this season, despite the team’s overall struggles, contributing 15 goals and seven assists in 53 appearances across all competitions. As vice-captain, his departure would represent a significant loss for the club. Chelsea are expected to demand a fee exceeding his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €91.3 million to part with the player.
Potential suitors, including Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Paris Saint-Germain, will need to meet Chelsea’s valuation to secure Fernandez’s signature. This high asking price could prove to be a major obstacle in completing a transfer before the start of next season. His potential departure could reshape Chelsea’s midfield ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.
