Rafael Leao’s future at AC Milan is uncertain, with both Manchester United and Fenerbahçe emerging as potential destinations for the Portuguese forward. While Manchester United’s interest is longstanding, a new possibility has arisen in Turkey, though it hinges on the outcome of Fenerbahçe’s upcoming presidential elections in June.
The possibility of Leao’s departure before the World Cup appears unlikely, despite the recent launch of the club’s new kit featuring the player prominently. However, marketing decisions are no longer necessarily indicative of a player’s long-term future at a club. Alongside Leao, players such as Luka Modrić and Christian Pulisic are also considered potentially departing figures, though Leao’s situation appears most precarious.
Leao experienced a dip in form following a strong start to the season, hampered by physical issues and criticism regarding his attitude on the pitch. A tactical shift to move him from the wing to a central role also failed to yield the desired results. Furthermore, the team has reportedly shown vulnerability defensively when Leao is on the field. As a result, Milan are reportedly prepared to allow Leao to leave if a suitable offer is received.
Currently, Manchester United and Fenerbahçe are the primary candidates. Fenerbahçe’s interest stems from presidential candidate Hakan Safi, who has reportedly inquired about Leao’s availability. However, this interest is not new, dating back several weeks. The Turkish club’s election results, scheduled for June 6-7, and Leao’s substantial wages are key factors in determining the feasibility of a move. Leao himself is reportedly monitoring the situation, potentially awaiting interest from Barcelona, and is expected to be on the bench for Milan’s upcoming match against Cagliari after serving a suspension. He has not scored since March 1st, raising questions about whether his final appearance at the San Siro has already occurred.
