Luís, 40, most recently managed Brazilian side Flamengo, leading them to both a Campeonato Brasileiro Série A title and a Copa Libertadores triumph during his tenure. He was relieved of his duties at Flamengo in March of this year, bringing an end to a successful spell that saw him establish a reputation as an emerging managerial talent. Prior to entering management, Luís enjoyed a distinguished playing career as a left-back, featuring for clubs including Benfica, Atlético Madrid, and Chelsea.
While Hjulmand remains under contract with Leverkusen until 2027, the club appears determined to bring about a change in leadership. Leverkusen finished sixth in the Bundesliga last season, failing to qualify for the Champions League. The club’s ambition is to consistently compete at the highest level of European football, and a new managerial appointment is viewed as crucial to achieving that goal.
