Former Brazil international Filipe Luís has been appointed as the new manager of AS Monaco, the Ligue 1 club confirmed on Tuesday. Luís has signed a contract with Monaco that will run until 2028, returning to European football after a spell in charge of Flamengo.
Luís, 41, previously managed Flamengo’s first team from September 2024, having progressed through the club’s youth ranks as a coach. He led Flamengo to a Copa Libertadores title in 2025, earning him the South American Coach of the Year award that same year. However, he was dismissed in March following a difficult start to the 2026 season and reported disagreements with the club’s president, Luiz Eduardo Baptista.
During his playing career, Luís spent four years with Flamengo from 2019 to 2023, becoming a popular figure with the club’s supporters. Prior to his return to Brazil, he enjoyed successful spells with Atlético Madrid, where he made 333 appearances and won multiple trophies including the Europa League and La Liga, and Chelsea, winning the Premier League in 2015. He earned 44 caps for the Brazilian national team.
Monaco were seeking a new manager after the departure of Sébastien Pocognoli on July 1st, with the Belgian having recorded 16 wins, 9 draws, and 13 defeats during his tenure. Luís will be joined at Monaco by Ivan Palanco (assistant coach) and Diogo Linhares (fitness coach), both of whom worked with him at Flamengo. The club has also retained Antony Santiago as an assistant coach, and appointed Jyri Nieminen as goalkeeping coach, the latter having previously worked with Lukáš Hrádecký at Feyenoord Rotterdam and with the Finnish national team.
This appointment signifies Monaco’s ambition to challenge at the top of Ligue 1, bringing in a coach with a proven track record in South American competition and a wealth of experience from European football. Luís’s return to Europe is seen as a significant step in his managerial career, and he will be eager to replicate his success with Flamengo in France.
