Fiorentina are set to sign Brazilian defender Viery from Gremio in a deal worth approximately €13 million plus bonuses, according to reports in Italy. The 18-year-old, born in 2005, is expected to travel to Florence next week to undergo a medical and finalize a five-year contract with Fabio Grosso’s side.
The transfer represents a significant outlay for Fiorentina, exceeding the €15 million previously spent on defender Marin Pongracic. It also marks Gremio’s largest ever sale of a defender, highlighting Viery’s potential and the club’s willingness to capitalize on a promising talent. The deal has been in advanced stages for some time, with both clubs working to finalize the details.
Viery established himself in the Gremio first team last season, making 27 appearances across all competitions. During those matches, the young centre-back contributed two goals and one assist, demonstrating his ability to impact the game at both ends of the pitch. His performances attracted interest from several other clubs, including Juventus, but Fiorentina ultimately proved the most persuasive.
Fiorentina are bolstering their defensive options ahead of the new Serie A season, with Grosso looking to build a competitive squad capable of challenging for European qualification. The arrival of Viery adds youth and potential to the team’s backline, providing competition for existing players and offering a long-term solution in the centre of defence. The team will begin pre-season training at the Viola Park in the coming days, and Viery is expected to join up with his new teammates shortly after completing his medical.
