SC Freiburg are in talks with Leeds United regarding a potential summer transfer for forward Wilfried Gnonto, according to Sky Germany. Negotiations between the Bundesliga club and the 22-year-old’s representatives have begun, though the deal is considered challenging for Freiburg to complete.
Leeds are reportedly open to both a permanent sale and a loan deal with an obligation to buy for Gnonto, as reported by transfer journalist Florian Plettenberg. The Italian international joined Leeds from FC Zurich in September 2022, quickly becoming a fan favourite with his pace and dribbling ability. He has featured 28 times for the Whites in the Premier League, scoring four goals.
However, Gnonto’s playing time has been limited this season under various managers at Elland Road. He has provided three assists in 473 minutes of Premier League action, struggling to consistently break into the starting eleven. A calf injury earlier in the campaign also hampered his progress and reduced his availability.
Freiburg are seeking to bolster their attacking options ahead of next season, and see Gnonto as a potentially exciting addition to their squad. The Breisgau club are currently competing for a Champions League spot in the Bundesliga, and adding a player of Gnonto’s profile could strengthen their chances of success. Transfermarkt.com currently values the player at €18 million.
The complexity of the deal stems from Freiburg’s financial limitations compared to Premier League clubs, and Leeds’ desire to recoup a significant fee for a player who still holds considerable potential. Should Freiburg successfully navigate these hurdles, Gnonto could provide a dynamic attacking outlet for Christian Streich’s side. This move would likely signal a step towards more European football for the young Italian.
