SC Freiburg have announced the signing of goalkeeper Mio Backhaus from SV Werder Bremen, with the 22-year-old set to join the club ahead of the 2026/27 Bundesliga season. The transfer was confirmed by Freiburg on Thursday, bolstering their goalkeeping options for the future.
Backhaus established himself as a regular in the Werder Bremen starting eleven during the 2023/24 season, making 26 appearances in the Bundesliga. He arrived at Bremen in 2021 from the youth academy of Hamburger SV, initially serving as a backup before earning his opportunity to showcase his abilities. While Bremen struggled overall, finishing 10th, Backhaus’s performances drew attention from several clubs, according to Sky Sports.
Freiburg’s board member Jochen Saier praised Backhaus’s composure and potential, stating that the goalkeeper “made a real impression in his first Bundesliga season and showed the level he is already capable of playing at.” Saier also highlighted Backhaus’s well-rounded skillset and belief that he will integrate seamlessly into the existing goalkeeping department, which currently includes Noah Atubolu and Benjamin Uphoff.
Backhaus himself expressed his enthusiasm for the move, stating that Freiburg “felt like the perfect fit” for him. He cited the positive conversations with club officials, the appeal of the city and stadium, and the style of football played at Freiburg as key factors in his decision. The player expressed his desire to contribute to team success and is eager to begin his time with the club.
The financial details of the transfer were not disclosed by either club. However, given Backhaus’s age and potential, a modest fee is expected. This move provides Freiburg with a long-term goalkeeping solution and adds competition for places, while Werder Bremen will need to identify a replacement before the start of the 2026/27 season. The signing indicates Freiburg’s continued commitment to developing young talent and maintaining a competitive squad in the Bundesliga.
