Napoli winger Matteo Politano has publicly stated his desire to remain with the club, following their Serie A title-winning season. Speaking on Radio CRC, a partner station of Napoli, Politano reflected on the team’s recent successes and expressed his affection for the city and its supporters.
Politano acknowledged the challenges of the season, citing injuries and periods where the team struggled to field a full squad, but emphasized the strong team spirit that ultimately led to their triumph. He playfully debated which of Napoli’s recent Scudetti – the third in 2023 and the fourth in 2024 – was more satisfying, ultimately leaning towards the latter due to the greater sense of struggle and anxiety throughout the campaign.
The 30-year-old also discussed his preferred role within the team, acknowledging the evolving demands of modern football and his willingness to contribute wherever needed, though he admitted a preference for playing as an attacking winger. He feels he has grown significantly as a player during his time at Napoli and is eager to continue developing his game at a high level. Politano highlighted the difficult matches against Copenhagen and PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League, framing them as valuable learning experiences for the team, including its younger players.
Politano praised the impact of new additions to the squad, particularly Alessandro Vergara, noting his determination and potential for growth. He also spoke positively about the integration of Kevin De Bruyne, lamenting the Belgian’s lengthy injury absence. The Italian international expressed disappointment regarding Italy’s failure to qualify for a major tournament, viewing it as a missed opportunity for experienced players like himself. He suggested a need for investment in youth development within Italian football to nurture homegrown talent. Politano concluded by emphasizing his strong bonds with teammates like Leonardo Spinazzola and Giovanni Di Lorenzo, and the team’s focus on securing second place in Serie A to reward the Napoli fans.
