SC Freiburg have completed the permanent signing of midfielder Yannik Engelhardt from Como 1907 for a fee of around €7 million, the Bundesliga club confirmed. The 25-year-old has signed a long-term contract with Freiburg, returning to the German topflight after a loan spell with Borussia Mönchengladbach last season.
Engelhardt spent the 2023-24 campaign on loan at Gladbach, making 26 appearances across all competitions. While he didn’t register a goal or assist, he gained valuable experience in the Bundesliga and demonstrated his tactical awareness. Prior to his move to Italy with Como, Engelhardt came through the youth ranks at Freiburg, making his senior debut for the club in 2019.
Freiburg sporting director Klemens Hartenbach praised Engelhardt’s qualities, stating that the player “made a very strong impression during his first stint at SC.” Hartenbach highlighted Engelhardt’s ability to read the game and his technical skill, adding that his “structural qualities” were highly valued at both Freiburg and Como. The club hopes to now combine those qualities with increased offensive output.
Competition for Engelhardt’s signature was reportedly strong, with Club Brugge also expressing interest. However, Freiburg were able to secure the deal with the agreed-upon €7 million fee. The transfer represents a significant investment for Freiburg, who are looking to build on their recent successes and compete for European qualification. Engelhardt’s return provides coach Christian Streich with another option in midfield, adding depth and tactical flexibility to the squad. This move allows Engelhardt to continue his development in a familiar environment and potentially establish himself as a key player for a consistently competitive Bundesliga side.
