VfB Stuttgart have confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Marius Funk from Energie Cottbus on a two-year contract. The 30-year-old returns to the club a decade after leaving its youth academy, bolstering Stuttgart’s goalkeeping options ahead of the upcoming season. No financial details of the transfer have been disclosed.
Funk progressed through the Stuttgart youth system before departing in 2016, seeking regular first-team football. He spent several seasons gaining experience in lower leagues, eventually establishing himself as the number one choice at Energie Cottbus. He played a pivotal role in Cottbus’ promotion to the 2. Bundesliga during the 2025/26 campaign, demonstrating his capabilities between the posts.
Stuttgart’s sporting director, Fabian Wohlgemuth, highlighted the value of Funk’s experience and character. According to the club’s official statement, Wohlgemuth believes Funk’s development since leaving Stuttgart will make him a valuable asset to the team, both on and off the pitch. He praised Funk’s footballing abilities and personal qualities, indicating a belief that he will contribute significantly to the squad.
Funk himself expressed his delight at rejoining the club, stating he has consistently followed Stuttgart’s progress since his departure. He noted the club’s resurgence in recent years, acknowledging their climb back to the upper echelons of German football. He emphasized his eagerness to contribute to Stuttgart’s continued success, praising the passionate fanbase and the vibrant atmosphere surrounding the club.
Stuttgart finished second in the Bundesliga last season, securing Champions League qualification. The addition of Funk provides depth and competition in the goalkeeping department, potentially serving as a reliable backup or challenging for the starting position. This move strengthens Stuttgart’s squad as they prepare for a demanding season balancing domestic and European commitments.
