Nico Gonzalez’s potential return to Atlético Madrid is proving complicated despite the player’s desire to rejoin the Spanish club, according to reports from TuttoSport. Gonzalez spent last season on loan at Atlético from Juventus, but the Spanish side did not trigger the €32 million obligation to buy at the end of the loan period.
Atlético had hoped to negotiate a lower fee with Juventus, believing Gonzalez’s strong preference for a return to Madrid would facilitate a deal around €20 million. However, Gonzalez’s positive performances for Argentina at the recent Copa América have potentially increased his market value, giving Juventus more leverage in negotiations.
While Juventus are open to selling players to improve their financial situation, manager Luciano Spalletti reportedly values Gonzalez highly. Spalletti views the 28-year-old as a valuable alternative to Kenan Yildiz and Francisco Conceicao, capable of playing on either wing. The Juventus coach intends to speak with Gonzalez after the tournament to gauge his desires and current mindset.
Despite Spalletti’s admiration, Juventus may be compelled to sell, and Gonzalez remains a likely candidate due to his marketability. The club could potentially instigate an auction for the Argentinian, but Gonzalez’s clear preference for Atlético remains a significant factor. Atlético Madrid will need to reassess their offer, acknowledging Gonzalez’s demonstrated ability when fully fit and his continued relevance to the game.
