Rafael Leao’s future at AC Milan remains unresolved, with crucial discussions with new manager Paulo Fonseca expected after the World Cup, according to reports in Italy. While currently focused on Portugal’s campaign in Qatar, the 27-year-old forward is aware that the club considers him among their potential players to be sold.
Leao has recently shown positive form for Portugal, scoring against Uzbekistan and displaying confidence in the match against Colombia, though he has seen limited playing time so far in the tournament with only 46 minutes across three appearances. The situation stems from turbulent communication earlier this summer, when Leao publicly indicated his potential departure from Milan and expressed a preference for a move to England or Spain – though no concrete offers have materialized since.
The Portuguese international has since softened his stance, stating, “I know Amorim is a very good coach… I will decide my life after the World Cup.” This ambiguity has left the door open to various scenarios. Milan, even before Leao’s public comments, viewed him as a potential asset to be monetized, particularly given their need to generate funds following the acquisition of Gonçalo Ramos.
Currently, no clubs have presented bids approaching the reported €50 million valuation Milan places on Leao. The next step is anticipated to be a direct conversation with Fonseca to gauge the manager’s vision for the player’s role within the team. Fonseca’s opinion is expected to carry significant weight, with indications he has more influence than previous Milan managers. If Fonseca does not see a clear path for Leao, the club will likely demand a substantial offer for his transfer. A positive assessment from Fonseca would necessitate a reconciliation between Leao and the club, as well as a commitment from the player to adapt to the manager’s demanding tactical requirements, which emphasize defensive work rate and intensity.
