Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini expressed strong optimism that Paulo Dybala will remain with the club following their Champions League qualification. The team secured third place in Serie A, earning a return to the competition after a seven-year absence, with a hard-fought victory over Verona.
Gasperini, visibly emotional after the match, praised the team’s spirit and work ethic throughout the season. He highlighted a difficult period following a 5-2 defeat to Inter as the only significant low point, stating he raised expectations because of the players’ commitment. He also noted the crucial impact of forward Denzel Malen, who significantly improved the team’s attacking threat.
Regarding Dybala, Gasperini indicated he has been actively involved in discussions with both the player and the club’s ownership, the Friedkin family. He stated he believes Dybala will stay, emphasizing the importance of the Argentinian’s presence and the difficulties the team faced during his three-month absence. Gasperini jokingly suggested he wouldn’t know what to do if Dybala were to leave.
The manager also touched on the financial implications of Champions League qualification, stating it alleviates concerns regarding Financial Fair Play regulations and provides the club with the opportunity to strengthen the squad both economically and in terms of attracting talent. He acknowledged the increased competition but believes playing in Rome, in a consistently full stadium, is an attractive proposition for players.
Defender Gianluca Mancini echoed Gasperini’s sentiments, expressing immense joy and pride in the team’s achievement. He emphasized the collective effort and resilience of the squad, recalling a crucial run of five consecutive victories that propelled them towards their goal. Mancini also addressed criticism the experienced players had faced, asserting their unwavering commitment to the club and its supporters.
