Massimiliano Allegri’s second spell as AC Milan manager is under scrutiny following the club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League, according to reports in Italy. Milan finished the Serie A season in fifth place, securing a spot in the Europa League, but falling short of their initial goal of Champions League qualification and, later, a potential Scudetto challenge.
The season concluded with a defeat to Cagliari, mirroring a disappointing start against Cremonese, and sparking questions about Allegri’s future at the San Siro. The club’s performance saw six losses in their final ten matches, despite largely remaining in a Champions League qualifying position for much of the campaign. This late collapse has led to speculation regarding a managerial change, particularly as Allegri’s contract does not automatically renew without Champions League football.
Allegri himself has remained tight-lipped about his future, stating he would not discuss it following the final match. However, sources suggest that AC Milan owner Gerry Cardinale is considering a change in the dugout. This could potentially open the door for Allegri to consider a role with the Italian national team.
Betting markets currently indicate Antonio Conte and Roberto De Zerbi as leading contenders to replace Allegri, both priced at 25.00. Conte’s potential availability would likely increase should Allegri become the national team manager. De Zerbi recently secured safety for Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League, and is also being considered. Thiago Motta, previously managing Juventus, and Cesc Fabregas, who achieved a fourth-place finish with Como, are also being discussed as possible replacements, both currently at odds of 33.00.
The change in manager could signify a shift in approach for Milan, as they look to build on a foundation that ultimately fell short of expectations this season.
