Gian Piero Gasperini is poised to take charge of Roma, with the expectation he will have significant control over the club’s transfer policy, according to reports in Italy. The appointment comes after the club opted not to retain Claudio Ranieri, a decision Gasperini himself attributes to the Friedkin ownership being “disappointed” with Ranieri’s performance.
Roma’s current sporting director, Massara, is also likely to depart, with Gasperini expected to have a key role in selecting his replacement. The club’s ownership faced protests from supporters over ticket prices for the upcoming derby, adding to the pressure for a successful summer.
Gasperini has earned considerable support from the Roma fanbase due to the team’s strong recent form and their push for a Champions League place. Players have reportedly rallied around the coach, improving performances despite initial challenges. He is already taking a proactive role in contract negotiations, attempting to secure renewals for players such as Celik and El Shaarawy, with the situations of Dybala and Pellegrini also under consideration.
Gasperini stressed the importance of alignment with his vision, stating after a 4-0 win over Fiorentina that he needs “clarity” and would seek “a few more reinforcements” to achieve greater success. He made it clear he would only continue in the role if he could implement his own ideas, suggesting a need for a sporting director who shares his footballing philosophy. While D’Amico is a potential candidate, securing his services from Atalanta could prove difficult, with Manna and Giuntoli also being monitored.
The incoming manager is prioritizing experience and certainty as Roma prepares for its centenary season, aiming to avoid risky signings and build a squad capable of competing at the highest level.
