Rino Gattuso has been chosen as the new manager of Lazio, the club confirmed, but the move is currently contingent on resolving the contract of outgoing manager Maurizio Sarri. The situation is further complicated by Lazio president Claudio Lotito blocking Sarri’s potential move to Atalanta until the terms of his departure are finalized.
After evaluating several candidates, including foreign options, Lazio opted for Gattuso, citing his charisma, experience, and current contractual status. Unlike other targets such as Igor Tudor, Domenico Conceicao, and Davide Palladino, Gattuso is currently a free agent following his resignation from the Italian national team, allowing for an immediate appointment. He has previously managed Milan and Napoli, bringing a wealth of Serie A experience to the role. The agreement with Gattuso is for a two-year contract worth approximately €3 million per season.
However, the appointment remains on hold until Sarri’s contract with Lazio is terminated. Sarri has reportedly already reached an agreement with Atalanta to replace Gian Piero Gasperini, but Lotito is preventing the move until his own managerial situation is settled. Negotiations surrounding Sarri’s exit are proving difficult, as his current contract runs until 2028 and includes a salary of €2.5 million per year plus performance-based bonuses. A significant financial settlement, including a severance package and potential bonuses, is at the heart of the dispute.
A meeting between Lotito and Sarri is expected to take place, though it has not yet been scheduled. Reports suggest a strained relationship between the two men could further complicate the negotiation process. Despite the challenges, an agreement is anticipated, but it is unlikely to be swift. The club's decision to appoint Gattuso suggests a desire for stability and a manager who can immediately step into the role, while the Sarri situation continues to unfold.
