Lutsharel Geertruida has been added to the Netherlands’ World Cup squad as a late replacement for the injured Jurriën Timber, according to reports from multiple outlets including Sky Sports. The 25-year-old, currently on loan at Sunderland from RB Leipzig, received the call-up from national team manager Ronald Koeman ahead of the tournament’s opening matches.
Geertruida’s inclusion comes after Timber was deemed unfit despite recently returning to action for Arsenal in their Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain. The defender has accumulated 21 caps for the Netherlands, including appearances in recent Euro 2024 qualifying matches against France and Austria. His versatility will be a welcome addition for Koeman as the squad prepares for a challenging group stage.
Sunderland will not be pursuing a permanent deal for Geertruida, despite having a €23 million option to buy included in the loan agreement. The Championship club have decided against activating the clause, meaning the player will return to RB Leipzig following the conclusion of his loan spell. He enjoyed regular playing time at the Stadium of Light, featuring prominently in their promotion push.
Koeman had previously cited fitness concerns as the reason for omitting Jeremie Frimpong from the initial squad, and has now opted for Geertruida as Timber’s replacement. This decision suggests Koeman values Geertruida’s current match fitness and ability to slot into multiple positions within the defence. The Netherlands begin their World Cup campaign against Japan on June 14th, and Geertruida will be vying for a place in the starting eleven.
Geertruida initially joined RB Leipzig in 2021 from Feyenoord, but has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter in the Bundesliga. The loan spell at Sunderland provided him with valuable first-team experience, and he will now look to make an impact on the international stage. His inclusion in the World Cup squad represents a significant opportunity to showcase his talents and potentially secure a more prominent role at RB Leipzig upon his return.
