Ghana international Gideon Mensah has completed a move to Bundesliga side FC Cologne after his contract with AJ Auxerre expired. The 27-year-old defender has signed a two-year deal with the German club, officially joining them as a free agent. Auxerre confirmed Mensah’s departure, praising his commitment and impact during his four seasons with the club.
Mensah made 114 appearances for Auxerre, winning a Ligue 2 title with them in 2024. He recently featured for Ghana at the 2023 World Cup, playing in their round of 16 defeat against Colombia. Auxerre had already begun preparing for Mensah’s exit, signing Sékou Fofana from Lausanne-Sport on a four-year contract on July 8th.
FC Cologne’s director Thomas Kessler expressed the club’s delight at securing Mensah’s signature. According to the club website, Kessler highlighted Mensah’s international experience as a significant asset, noting his strong performances in France and at the World Cup. He described Mensah as a team-oriented player with tactical discipline, solid defensive capabilities, and dynamic energy.
Kessler stated that Mensah’s addition will bolster the stability and quality of Cologne’s squad, which finished 14th in the Bundesliga last season. Mensah’s arrival provides Cologne with an experienced left-back option as they look to improve their defensive solidity in the upcoming campaign. The move represents a step up for Mensah, allowing him to test himself in one of Europe’s top five leagues.
